About Marion Education Foundation
Inspiring life-long learners, empowering educators, and strengthening engagement of the Bulldog Community.
The History of the Marion Education Foundation
The Marion Education Foundation (MEF) was founded on January 31, 2001, by Dr. Tom DeKunder and Dennis Dryer with a shared vision to enhance educational opportunities within Marion ISD.

Founding Board Members included Dr. Sally Boeck, Jackie Valentein, Maria Valle, and Buster Cage - each dedicated to advancing the quality of education for both students and staff.

The Foundation was created with the mission to support educational programs that could not be funded through the district’s regular budget. Its purpose remains focused on generating innovative sources of funding to promote Marion ISD’s vision of educational excellence.

The MEF began its fundraising efforts with the annual Tamale/Chili Supper held each February, a tradition that continues today. To expand support, a summer Casino Night event was added two years ago and has significantly boosted fundraising capacity. What began as a modest $1,500 contribution to the district has grown into over $35,000 in donations by 2024.

Over the years, MEF has expanded its impact through teacher grants and scholarships, including the Dr. Tom DeKunder Excellence in Education Scholarship for the Valedictorian and the Dr. Sally Boeck Scholarship for the Salutatorian. The Foundation also proudly funds the “Leader in Me” program at Marion Elementary Schools, helping to instill leadership skills and confidence in our youngest learners.

Through continued community support and a commitment to innovation, the Marion Education Foundation remains a driving force behind educational growth and opportunity in Marion ISD.
